Bannock on a stick
Recipe:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- ½ tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. sugar
- 3 Tbsp. lard, bacon grease or canola oil
- 1 cup cold water
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- ½ tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. sugar
- 3 Tbsp. lard, bacon grease or canola oil
- 1 cup cold water
How we prepared it:
- It advance we mixed all the dry ingredients in a bowl
- At school we mixed in the oil and water
- We found a fire box. Started a fire and got dry wood to burn. We found branches to cook our bannock on [ reasonable size not thin but not to big]
- wrapped the dough around the stick and let in cook over coals.
Since the coals from the previous fire were almost out we decided to make another one, since most people were already sharing one fire and there was no space. We went out and collected wood and started a fire near the small stream . The boys [TJ and Ty ]help us maintain our fire as we were cooking the bannock. Our recipe was well done considering that the consistency was perfect comparing to other groups with their dough seemed to be dripped of of their stick. It requires patients. In the end mine tasted great and was perfectly brown ,since I had waited for the wood to burn out so i could use the coals to cook the bread rather than letting the fire burn it. With some butter the bread tasted great. The only thing I would do next time is to heat the stick before we put the dough on. Heating the stick which will allow the bread to cook from the inside out and come out perfectly.
